In other words, you must show the company that it is worth their while to keep you on, rather than letting you go. This is why you want to show your worth, rather than your devotion.
HOW DO YOU SHOW YOUR WORTH?Showing your worth at a job is simple, yet difficult. Notice I did not say it is easy. You must simply work hard, work smart, and work fast. In order to work hard, you need to understand what your job is: what your duties are and where your responsibilities lie. Ask the questions you need to ask and then buckle down and work hard. Work smart means to be efficient and don't worry about frills. Find the best way to do something. You could even share your ideas with your co-workers. Working fast means that you can move on to other duties quickly.
All of this adds up to you being a high-quality employee who is capable of doing the best job of anyone in the office. Becoming this top-notch employee shows your boss that you have great worth.
HOW DO YOU NOT SHOW DEVOTION?First establish your worth by working hard and smart. You can keep the devotion factor out by never staying late and by keeping your options open. As you become a worthy, experienced employee, you will surely find other opportunities out there. When you find one that looks good and where the pay is potentially more, apply. When you have an offer, go to your boss and tell him/her that you would like to stay with the company, but you have an attractive offer on the table.
