ALT-1 How to become a Music Teacher
Sharing the gift of music with others can be a very rewarding experience. Music teachers require passion, a dedication to their craft, and patience. Before you decide to go into this field there are some things you need to know.
Musical Skills
Before you decide to become a music teacher you’ll need some skills in music. Most music teachers have played some sort of instrument for a number of years before deciding to take up teaching. Many music schools looking for teachers will require that teachers have some sort of music degree such as a bachelor’s degree or a master degree in music. Having these skills is essential to land a top paying job teaching music. There are some circumstances that you won’t need that type of education such as a teacher who teaches from home. Some music stores might just hire you because you are proficient on your instrument and not because you have academic credentials. Having an education in music will only benefit you in the long run when it comes to landing a job as a music teacher. Another thing you might want to take into consideration is the age of student you will want to work with.
Teaching from Home
Many music teachers take their joy of music and teach from home. In this case you don’t need any formal education. This can give you a lot of freedom when it comes to teaching but it may be difficult in the beginning to make a decent living at it. If you plan on doing it full-time you might want to get a business license. Teaching from home may bring added costs such as musical equipment, studio setup, and materials for your students. You may choose this method if you already work in the music industry and play for a band which can help you put extra money in your pocket.
Private Schools and Music Schools
Becoming a music teacher in private school or a music school with require more work. It will be difficult if not impossible to land a job without proper formal education. It is always best to check with the school and see the education requirements they need for teachers. You may require several years of training before a school will hire you. If you want to go down this route you should plan ahead.
Finding the Job
Once you have the skills you can go look for a job. If you plan to teach from home you can put flyers up at shopping malls and spread the message from word of mouth. If you already play in a band you can let people know around you that you teach on the side. Visit your local music store and offer your services to them. Having a website can also benefit you when it comes to getting students. When looking for a formal job in music you can check job boards, the newspaper, or even call the school and ask if they need any teachers.
Summary
Becoming a music teacher requires a love of music and the skills to share that passion with others. To become a formal teacher in a school you’ll need the education to get hired. Teaching from home doesn’t require that type of formal skill but it can’t hurt to learn as much as you can about music before deciding to become a music teacher.
