ALT-1 How to Parallel Park

From 3arf

Even though the thought of it scares the majority of newly licensed drivers and a number of adults, parallel parking does not have to be a hair-raising experience.  There are a few basic concepts to keep in mind when tackling this skill.

Before you even think about parallel parking, get to know your vehicle.  If you are driving a 1970’s Cadillac in New York City, you are just asking to crease a fender.  You don’t have to take measurements, but you should know the basic shape of your vehicle so you can compare it to stationary objects while maneuvering your vehicle into the parking spot.

Make sure you adjust your mirrors correctly before driving anywhere.  This allows you to properly see down the sides of your vehicle and what’s behind you.

Now that you are on the street and circling the block many times to find that perfect spot, make sure it is not blocking any fire hydrants or that it may be along a painted curb.

You’ve found the spot, now to get the car into it.  First look to make sure you can actually, safely back your car into the space.  Then drive past the spot enough to be able to get the back end around the car next to you.  Look in your rearview mirror to make sure oncoming traffic is not blocking you or barreling down on you.

Now, after you put the car in reverse and the spot is clear, point the steering wheel towards the direction you want to go to get the back end of the car going in that direction. (Into the parking space)

As you are backing in, don’t turn the wheel too sharply or you will end up on the curb.  Also, make sure you do not get too close to the vehicle you pulled up next to (which happens to be the one you will be behind when you are done).  Once your front wheel is next to the back bumper of the vehicle next to you, start to turn your steering wheel the opposite way to get the front end of the car going into the parking spot.

While attempting this, make sure you don’t take off the rear bumper of the vehicle you will eventually be behind.  As you complete this stage you will see that you are aligning the vehicle parallel to the curb.  Now that you are in the spot, safe and sound, position your vehicle so that you have equal room between you and the cars in front of and behind you.  If you are on a hill, turn your wheels against or away from the curb depending on whether you are facing up hill or downhill.

After you celebrate this victory, don’t forget to pay the meter or you will have a ticket.  Congratulations, you have just successfully parallel parked and are on your way to becoming a pro.
