ALT-1 How to Negotiate a Higher Salary

From 3arf

Life is much too short to settle for a low income job. One of the most useful pieces of information that can be offered to anyone following a specific career path is to never be truly content with what you are earning because being submissive is the best sure-fire way to put the nail in the coffin in regards to progressing your career and subsequently increasing and furthering your pay check. For those that really aren’t happy with what they are earning or even those that feel that they are not being paid what they are worth, there are a number of ways as to how to negotiate a higher salary so that you can finally purchase everything you want as well as everything you need.

Weigh up your options beforehand

One of the best ways to get a higher salary and pay check at work is to first weigh up your options. If you are in a specific job role or field, do a simple search over a period of time to see if you are getting paid what you are worth based on your experience and qualifications. More often than not, especially with the demand for work in today’s recession-ridden society, you will likely find a similar job that pays the same or even higher. Do not take any risks when asking for a pay check. Send out feelers to see if you can actually get a better salary by going elsewhere before pitching the idea of a raise to your boss.

Present accurate and detailed information

When you actually meet your boss to discuss a pay rise, it is important that you go in feeling confident and also that you go in fair. You can not just go in and request a pay rise for no reason. You need accurate and detailed information to support your request. Show your boss that you have done your research. Present them with information showing them that if you went elsewhere, you could get a higher salary and a better deal overall. You should also show them exactly how their company has benefited from having you on board. This can be presented by the amount of sales you have made, the amount of overtime or shift covers you have done or even the amount of time or years you have been with the company. Don’t go in unprepared or they will simply laugh you out the door, perhaps even with a nasty “you’re fired” to go with it.

Showcase your worth within the workplace

When asking for a salary raise, it is important to boast and showcase exactly what you have done for the company. If you have already progressed up the career ladder in the past, boast this to your boss. Basically, the key to getting a successful salary raise is to impress them and show them that you work hard enough to be worthy of one. Your salary raise could come due to a career progression, more hours or even simply based on your credentials that you have built from your time with the company. Do not be afraid to ask for a salary raise, but make sure that you have a case and that you have earned one beforehand or again, you will likely be met with the answer that you don’t want to hear. Take steps to negotiate and subsequently be granted the salary and pay rise that you have worked so long and hard for.
