ALT-1 How to Increase your Chances of getting Promoted at Work

From 3arf

Sometimes it seems as if everyone else is winning promotion and you are not rising through the company ranks as fast as you would wish. How can you increase your chances of gaining promotion at work? There are many ways that you can do so; here are a few effective ideas.

The most obvious way to get your employer to notice you, and your abilities, is to do a good job. Be thorough in your work, avoid errors as far as possible, do that little bit more than you are asked to do and get your work done promptly. Make your word your bond in the workplace, if you say that you will finish this task by that date, ensure that you do so, if you promise a customer that they will have their goods by such a time, move heaven and Earth to make sure that they do. If you tell a colleague that you will cover their shift, do not let them down at the last minute.

Do not be late for work, be more than prompt, that means that at your start time, you should not be making yourself coffee or adjusting your make up, you should be sitting at your desk, or standing by your bench, ready to begin work immediately. Do not take unnecessary sick time but do not struggle into work when you are obviously ill and infect the whole workplace. Be a reliable and dependable employee. Be willing and positive at work, volunteer for the difficult, niggly or unpleasant tasks that no one else wants to do. Keep your eyes open for tasks that highlight your skills and talents and volunteer for those.

Your manners, and how you relate to others, are part of the armoury of skills and attributes that will help you to gain that long awaited promotion. Be positive in your dealings with others, treat everyone colleagues, superiors, customers and others with good manners, respect, courtesy and consideration. That does not mean that you ingratiate yourself with the boss and ignore everyone else, treat everyone with dignity and do not be ingratiating with anyone, such behaviour shows you to be a false and shallow person.

Think before you speak or act; tact and diplomacy are important managerial skills. Managers have to deal with sensitive, difficult, highly personal and confidential information and situations, acting or speaking rashly could inflame a difficult or sensitive situation, spread gossip about something confidential, or allow others to know about a worker’s personal  affairs that the worker wanted kept confidential. No sensible employer would promote an employee who cannot think before speaking or acting. Managers may have to negotiate with workers or other companies, hear all kinds of workers’ personal matters and confidential information, a manager who does not think before speaking or acting could leave the company open to lawsuits, lose the company workers or customers, and ruin a company’s good reputation.

Winning that coveted promotion means showing your employer that you have the skills and attributes of a manager. Think about how you could show your superiors that you are worth promoting, that you will make a good manager and that you would be a valuable asset to the company in a managerial position.
