ALT-1 How to Find a Good Auto Mechanic

From 3arf

When something goes wrong with your car sometimes you don’t know where to turn. How do you know when you have found a good auto mechanic? These can be tough decisions, but there are a few things you can do. Here are some tips that might help you out.

One way to know that the people working in the shop are good quality mechanics is to look for their ASE certification. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence tests the knowledge of individuals working in the industry. They issue certificates and businesses usually hang it where customers are able to see them. You can even search online for ASE certified shops in your area.

Unless the place just opened it might be a red flag if they don’t have any other business. It can be possible that it is just a slow time, but if they don’t have any other cars maybe there is a reason no one goes to that shop. Of course if you need your vehicle back quickly it may not be reasonable to take it to a very busy shop, but this is something you should keep in mind.

If you are iffy about a place you might be able to find reviews that people have written online for different local mechanics.  You can use these to help you in your decision, but it is always better to get the opinion of people you know and trust. Ask your friends and family about the places they have taken their cars in the past and what kind of experiences they had.

Another thing you should look for is reasonable upfront prices. If a shop beats around the bush about how much something is going to cost you it might be because they are trying to overcharge you. There are some instances where the problem is something that is very uncommon and they might have to hook your car up to a computer or do other things that cost before they can give you an estimate, but usually you can still choose to take it elsewhere if you feel the estimate is too high. Once you know what is wrong with your car you can call around and get prices from other places to see if what they are charging is reasonable or not.

If you use these simple techniques you should be able to find a good auto mechanic in your area. Just remember to do your homework before making a hasty decision. It could save you a lot in the long run.
