ALT-1 How to Decide which Career to Choose
You should take time, very careful thought and consideration over which career to choose. It is not a decision to take quickly. You will spend many years working. Although it is possible to change your career, in practice people rarely change, once they set out on a career path. You should consider the following factors, when trying to make this important decision.
You begin by looking honestly at yourself and the things that you enjoy. If you love art and science leaves you cold, you would be silly to consider a career as a doctor. To be a doctor, you would have to spend years studying subjects that you do not enjoy qualifying yourself for a career that you will not enjoy either. Trying to force yourself against your into a career for which you are temperamentally unsuited will cause you unhappiness and potentially sour your character. You may never be more than a mediocre doctor, whereas if you choose a career as an art teacher, graphic designer, set designer, fashion designer or any one of many professions connected with art, you will have the talent and passion for your subject to succeed and reach the top of your chosen profession.
Consider also your character traits and personality. To consider a career as a lawyer would be foolish unless have the orderly brain, attention to detail, brilliant memory, and ability to organize facts into a convincing and coherent argument that a lawyer needs.
Money is a consideration however it is not and never should be the primary factor in your choice. You want to earn sufficient to live and pay your way. You may want to be an artist, but unless starving in a garret turns you on, you might want to consider a related career and do your real art in your leisure time until you are famous.
When choosing a career you may need some careers advice. Some countries have free careers advisory services for both young people and adults. In the United Kingdom,Fast Tomatois a careers education and advice site for young people aged twelve, and upwards, used in most UK schools. A comprehensive career guidance site for teenagers isexplain that stuff. A UK government careers advice site for adults isnextstep, which also has various links to other helpful sites.
When choosing your occupation, remember you will spend many years working so your career should be something that you enjoy. It is miserable to be stuck in a job that you hate and it affects you and everyone around you. Consider your own personality, character and talents, and choose carefully and thoughtfully, so that you make the right decision for you so that you can be successful in your chosen career.
