ALT-1 How to Chart your Ideal Career Path
To chart or Charting gives you the idea of planning, tabling, setting up or visually representing the career direction of your life. This is necessary so that you can follow a clear direction, path or roadmap towards your fulfillment; this is because your fulfillment as a person is tied to your career (life pursuit). It's important first to know what your career is before you chart the path or the direction it will take.
But what is a career? A career is an occupation, a line of business or profession (line of work or life pursuit) that is tied to ones skills, capabilities, and abilities which are unique to each individual. Through ones career, one is able to earn a living, realize goals, develop oneself and also grow in life.
How do you know your career? If one's career is tied to his abilities, skills and potential then what one needs to come up with is a list of what one can do. For example, I can teach, counsel, sing, or encourage.ask yourself, of these skills which ones, are you particularly very good at and what would you love to do for a lifetime? Then ask yourself whether you need to acquire special knowledge or added skills to boost the skills that you already have.
Another way of gravitating easily to what you can do is simply realizing that you have always had all the resources you need to be and to do anything that you want in life. Secondly, ask yourself what you want in life? What do you want? That is the million dollar question! Let us say you want wealth and fame! Take a pen and paper and lay out a plan that will help you reach the goals of opulence and recognition. Unquestionably you will have to take stock of the resources that you already have easily at your disposal. That is, your skills, abilities and potential will give you a clue to what line of occupation that you will be able to pursue in order to realize your goals. It is that commitment to what you can do, over a period of time using your skills; in order to realize your goals that becomes known as a career (line of pursuit).
Now evolve a plan that will cover now, tomorrow, this week, this month, this year, and roughly let it be a plan that can cover a five year's term. Ask yourself the following questions:-1. What do I need to do today to contribute towards my grand goals,2. What do I need to do this week to contribute towards my grand goals,3. What do I need to do this month to contribute towards my grand goals,4. And on and on put time into perspective till you cover even a ten year period.
Our goals may require the exercise of all our abilities and resources but many a person dedicates themselves to the exercise of one skill only. This is not bad especially in this age of specializationwhereby the development of one skill can be of utmost value and return. But what I am trying to suggest to you is thistake stock of all your abilities and over the long period of time work on each abilities to develop them into better skills.
With time these skills will turn you into a multifaceted individual with various streams or avenues that you can use to earn a livelihood. This definitely will enrich your career! Take the challenge of working on all your skills and your career life will exhibit beauty and grandeur that you little knew of.
