ALT-1 How being Passionate about your Job could Benefit your Long Term Career
If you’re passionate about your job you are generally willing to go the extra mile and to put in extra hours and take on additional tasks because you care about what you do. This can obviously benefit your career, as you will get yourself noticed as being someone who works hard, even though it is not necessarily your intention to make a name for yourself. Indeed, you probably don’t want to sidle up to the boss when you know it is likely to rub your colleagues up the wrong way. Having a passion for your work simply makes you want to do the best job you possible can, though.
Sometimes, you don’t have a lot of choice about what job to take, as you have bills to pay and so you need to earn money any way you can. As a consequence, you can find yourself doing a job that bores you to death and which you absolutely hate doing, but that provides you with a steady income. If you want to pursue a particular career and have some kind of success in the work you do it definitely helps to be passionate about your job, as otherwise you simply won’t make as much effort to take on extra responsibilities, which will ultimately affect your career prospects.
The chances are you will find it harder to achieve promotion in a company for which you have no particular attachment or loyalty to, as you will do the bare minimum in your day-to-day work which is hardly likely to make you stand out as a candidate worthy of promotion. Although, you probably won’t care that much, anyway, if you don’t like the company you’re working for or the people you work with. However, even when you decide to apply for other jobs your lack of passion in one job can affect your chances in another.
When you go for interviews and you are asked about your experience of the firm you work for you can hardly say that you’ve basically been doing as little work as possible because you hate your job, as this won’t make you look very good. You may have difficulty drawing upon any relevant examples where you have proven yourself if you have always sat in the background and done nothing. Thus, if you don’t have any passion for the job you do you shouldn’t put off trying to find a job that is more suitable for you, as the sooner you find a job you enjoy the better it will be for your long-term career.
