They call it a career path because there are many obstacles and many times where you need good navigating skills to get to where you want to go.
Think of your career as an adventure, where you don't necessarily go from point A to point B in a straight line. Sometimes you have to wait in the port of career standstill before you can finally get to where you want to go. Sometimes you have to wait in the airport of promotion before you can finally board that flight to bigger and better things for yourself. If you are content to sit and play sudoku in the terminal you are going to be better off when your flight arrives.
Knowing this about your career path will help you keep things in perspective. You shouldn't always be eager to go from one place to the next. While it seems fun to go from job to promotion to raise, you should keep the rest of your life in perspective as well. What about your family, what about being happy where you are for a little while? Just because you can get a raise doesn't mean you should take the job.
What about learning about people and the things that make them tick. What about just calming down for a minute and allowing yourself to just see what is going on around you. Learn the nuances of your job and don't be afraid to gain experiences regardless of what level those experiences come at.
When you are more patient you are more content and you can see more around you. The details start to come to you, and business is very detail oriented. Get to know the people around you and that is going to be a big reward for you. If you take time to develop relationships with those around you it will build your network and get you a promotion or a better job when the time comes to do so.
Be patient and enjoy yourself wherever you are in your career. Enjoy the journey and not necessarily trying to get ahead as soon as possible. Learn the skills to pay the bills first, and then watch as your career takes off and becomes a more meaningful experience for you.
