When you lose your job it can be a tremendous blow to your ego. However, look to this as an opportunity for change and making a new path for you. With the unemployment rate over 9% getting fired from a job is not necessarily a bad stigma on your career.
Leave on your own conditions
If you are brought into your boss’s office and told you are fired have a frank discussion. Talk to your boss about being allowed to resign instead of being fired. Many companies will allow you to leave on your own terms. Weigh your options. Depending on your state; this may prevent you from collecting unemployment benefits.
Exit interview
When you are fired from your job sit down with your manager to discuss the reasons you were let go. Talk about what improvements you can do for your future to prevent this from happening. Ask for constructive criticism that you can learn and grow from. Stay positive during this interview. While your frustration is valid you do not want this to come through during your dialogue. Being a professional person will be a value for your future.
Keep your connections
When you are fired it is tempting to take your anger out on your former coworkers. You need to check your negative emotions at the door. You never know who your next connection for a new job may be. Talk to your colleagues and see who is willing to write you a letter of recommendation for your work at the company. They can do this on your LinkedIn profile or hand you a hard copy.
Start putting the word out
Once you are let go from your job put the word out you are in the process of searching. You can use LinkedIn, Facebook even Twitter. Spreading the word will give you more opportunities with your connections to find a new job. Many of your colleagues or clients may have a lead for your next position.
Change
Change can be scary, especially when it is unexpected. Being scared is natural when you are put into these unforeseen circumstances. It may be time to reevaluate your career path. Start to evaluate if you are working in a career you are passionate about. You can use this as a chance to take classes to further your education and possible boost your career or change to another direction.
Getting fired is never an easy thing to hear. Turning it around to save your career is important for future job opportunities. Take it as a learning experience and move on to your next journey.
