ALT-1 Driver Safety the Dangers of Speeding
Speed is the worst drug of all!"Speed is one of the most lethal drugs in the country". Yet possession of this drug is not illegal! It is only illegal to use it! The truth is all drivers have it but not everyone dares to use it. We all give out about the 17-25 year olds, branding them as "boy racers" The truth is they are addicted to the most addictive drug there is.When their parents started driving; one did what one was told. This was the reason so many people thronged the country's churches. They more or less made to go. This country has changed; young people choose what they want to do, and they do it. When a young person starts driving in a powerful car, they know they have the power, when they want to use it, they use it regardless of speed limits.Once they experience that rush one gets from speed they are hooked and will not slow down for anyone. I know myself that speed kills but because I have got addicted to speed, I have decided to sell my car.A harsh enough decision I know but there is no other way to curb an addiction than to take away the drug.The government should but 120km/h limiters in all new cars because being honest why do we need cars capable of over treble the maximum speed limit on our roads; over 2 million (cars on our roads), that's like handing out over 2 million loaded guns.If all cars were speed restricted the government would lose revenue in speeding tickets, which would have the government giving this idea a definite "thumbs down".If cars were limited; the 180km/h jack lynch tunnel race would never have took place. This was one of the more popular ones but the truth is, that much more are taking place throughout the country every weekend.These young drivers are terrorising other road users but they are only smoking the drug that kills most young people per year "speed"We need to help these people to kick their addiction or else it will be the end of road safety.By Donncha BurkeSkibbereen Co.Cork
