Creating a job that becomes your hobby

The study of what we are, or more accurately how our mind works was the great discovery through the 19th and 20th centuries and is still gaining ground, largely due to people such as Psychologists, Life Coaches, Business Coaches and Performance Coaches. Coaches need to understand what their client's belief systems are, what they perceive, how they think and how they control their emotions, all these are termed the internal barriers to success. These internal barriers to success, determine the external barrier to success; their habits or behaviours. More importantly, they need to get their clients, family and friends to understand them as well.

During my research over the past few years, I have found that each person lives their life to a certain code, even those people who do not consciously plan to do so, do. This code they live by, can be traced to the events and experiences that each person has had in their life. These events help to form our belief system: if an event was bad, then this would lead to a limiting belief, which in turn would lead to negative thoughts (self-talk) and negative emotions that would result in an individual experiencing feelings towards what has happened. Our thoughts, beliefs and emotions determine our habits/behaviours. If you are in a negative state of mind; beliefs, thoughts, perceptions and emotions, then what you do by way of action would not be as positive, than if you were in a positive state of mind. The results of our efforts by way of action will either be failure or success, this in turn becomes an event or experience reinforcing what you believe in and therefore determining our potential to succeed in the future.

Our beliefs, thoughts, perceptions and emotions are our internal barriers to our success. These states are happening inside our mind and body and can only be controlled by our desire to focus on what needs to be done and taking control of the situation, instead of the situation taking control of us. We have what is called an emotional triad. This triad is formed of three very important elements: Focus/Beliefs; Physiology and Language. If we focus and/or believe that bad negative things will happen, then our body posture slumps; we breath very shallow and slow and hence we feel tired. This is compounded even more by the negative language that we use which reinforces our focus.

Our habits that we take, day in and day out determine what other people see in us and also determine the results that we get. In all cases, a negative internal barrier will always without fail cause a bad habit to be formed leading to a poor result, even though that result may not show up until much later in life. This whole process is a measure of our individual culture, our attitude.Ask yourself these three questions?

What do I really like doing?

What are my current thoughts on this?

What are my top negative and positive emotions on this?

As with all first steps you will encounter internal negativity, which can be removed as follows:

Identify what it is that is stopping you?

Describe what your life would be like if you did not take up this venture?

Describe what your life would be like if you did take up this venture?

Describe in a well-formed outcome what it is you really want?

List out the main steps and start.

Most people when they understand that they must do things one step at a time, sit down and write a list of things-to-do and start doing them. Unfortunately if it is a long list of say 20 or more activities which could take one or two weeks to resolve, interest is lost and the motivation to do the activities dies there and then.

When a successful person decides to do something they do not really want to do, like paint a wall, they visualise in their minds eye what the wall will look like when it is finished. In essence they have formed a mental picture of the outcome. The problem with most people is that they do not use this outcome to motivate themselves to do a good job, it becomes a chore. The result is that they did not enjoy the process and it may have taken them twice as long to complete it with a result being only a partial success. History and research has shown us that people who have achieved outstanding results are those who understand the power of the Well-Formed Outcome in determining the final result.

The following series of sequential questions must be asked and honestly answered in the positive by yourself to formulate your well-formed outcome to provide the necessary desire, enthusiasm and energy to achieve the success you want and deserve.

State very clearly and in the positive what your visualisation outcome for this goal is? What will you see, hear, feel and say when you have achieved it?

What will you lose when you have successfully achieved the goal?

What will you gain when you have achieved the goal?

Knowing what you now know, is the outcome for the goal worth what it is going to take to get it?

When you have decided what your career path or venture is to be there are a number of set things that you will need to be and do, to instill the necessary desire, faith, energy and enthusiasm to ensure you have all the passion you need to achieve it and make sure it does not become a chore.

Make sure you are dedicated to your client(s), service delivery and boss.

Make sure you become a good fit within your company.

Ensure that your service delivery comes first with your remuneration second.

Be a problem-solver and remember that creativity is innovation in action.

Accept responsibility.

Be accountable.

Have humility.

Be tenacious.

Embrace uncertainty and ambiguity.

Make decisions.

Be action orientated and results focused.

Let me round this off with giving you a 10-step process which if used regularly will help make you more successful.

1. Decide on what you want out of life.2. Write it down specifically in the form of a well-formed outcome.3. Read it 3 times a day; morning, noon and evening.4. Set a date for its accomplishment.5. Visualise achieving it often.6. Dream and imagine what it would feel like to achieve it.7. Develop a plan of action.8. Do 3 things every day to achieve it.9. Stay positive.10. Act as if you have already achieved it.
