ALT-1 Celebrating Valentines Day Single
Valentine's Day is a blessing for couples and a horrid, heart-wrenching, cheesy day for singles. What could be more annoying or painful than a day dedicated to celebrating that which you lack? It's no big surprise that many singles do whatever they can to avoid Valentine's Day... which is tough, considering how much emphasis stores put on shoving love and hearts in your face.
So why fight it? Don't. Rather than hole up in your home and wait for the horrid day to pass, get out and have some fun. There's plenty of things singles can do to celebrate on Valentine's Day which should keep their minds from focusing on their solitary status, and this list will provide a few such examples. Who knows, you may just discover your soul mate while celebrating, and not have to worry so much when the next year rolls around.
The ideal tactic for spending Valentine's Day as a single is to get together a bunch of similarly single buddies and do something together. Your group can be big, it can be small, it can be all girls, it can be all guys, it can be a mix. Who cares? The point is, leave the couples to smooch while you enjoy yourself with the rest of the bachelors and bachelorettes. This revelry can take any number of forms:
- A party, perhaps an Anti-Valentine's Day party;
- A night on the town, complete with food, drink and maybe some movie or theme park-based entertainment;
- A dance, or perhaps a dance club;
- Karaoke;
- Bowling, skating, mini putting or something similar; or, if you don't feel up to getting raucous,
- A night of coffee and chatting. Don't underestimate the strength of a good conversation between pals.
If you're single and don't have any other single friends, however, you might have to come up with some alternate arrangements. The first is to try and get yourself set up with a fresh date, either blind or previously acquainted, and spend the night getting to know them. It may go well, it may not, and either way you'll have companionship for the evening. There are a few ways to accomplish this in short order:
- Ask friends if they know anybody single;
-Check out an online dating service and see who's looking for a friend;
- Respond to personal ads in your area;
- Look to co-workers for potential companionship;
- Look for singles-only get-togethers arranged for Valentine's Day - don't worry, there are always a few; or, if you're feeling courageous,
- Try chatting up somebody who's sitting alone in a public place whom you fancy. You never know where the conversation might go.
The second is to do something fun by yourself that will occupy your time. See or rent a movie, play a game, go out and play laser tag, skate solo, read a book, maybe even go out dancing. It doesn't matter what you do, so long as you enjoy yourself. And if you really want to avoid Valentine's Day, you can always down a gravol and get in bed early.
Whatever you decide to do, there's one thing you must avoid at all costs: brooding. Getting upset. Stewing over your single status. Valentine's Day is a day of love between couples, yes, and all too often this attitude pushes singles to ponder their shortcomings in attracting a mate. Forget that! Spend the day just loving yourself and showing the world who you are and what you can do. If somebody recognizes your worth from your actions, then you'll be single no longer. If not, well, there are a lot of days in the year.
