Marriage is the ultimate commitment. When you've met someone that you want to spend a lifetime with, raise a family with, and make a million memories with, it's a special feeling. Pledging to love and honor that person 'till death do you part' is an amazing experience.
Deciding to commit your life, your successes, your family to another person takes a lot of trust. To find someone that you can hand the keys of your heart is rare and is worth holding on to. Standing up in front of God, friends and family and affirming that you will stand by this person is extremely powerful.
Watching older couples, like my grandparents who just celebrated their 63rd anniversary, there is an air of calm about them. They know that whatever life may throw in their path, they've each other to lean against. They have each other to laugh with when times get tough, and they have each other to be strong when the other waivers.
From a health standpoint, it is medically proven that men and women who marry live longer and more fulfilling lives, suffering from fewer health problems. Having someone to relieve stress with, share joy and sadness with, and cope with losses eases our burden of carrying it all alone.
Marrying someone that you love and respect also has the advantage of having a close adviser at your side. Hopefully, if you decide to marry someone you value their opinion and feel comfortable talking about hopes, dreams, concerns, and defeat with them. Knowing you can count on someone to be honest with you, supportive of you, and ready to listen is extremely satisfying.
Marriage not only has the advantages of being with your best friend all the time, but also has practical pluses. Being married means that if you decide to have children you will have a partner to raise them with. Your children will grow up with two parents, and two role models.
Financially speaking, marriage does have it's advantages. Married couples get tax cuts, share on rent, mortgages, and bills, save on multiple plan insurance policies and share card memberships for wholesale markets, auto clubs, and gyms. With less financial strain, couples can more aptly afford to save for retirement and large purchases as a team.
Although there are a million reasons to marry, the biggest reason should be love. For good and bad, you should love your partner, flaws and all. If you cannot imagine a life without your partner by your side, then that is the best reason to say "I do."
