ALT-15 How to Overcome the Fear of Public Speaking

From 3arf

The fear of public speaking is ranked higher than death in a list of most common fears, however being afraid to speak in front of people can have detrimental effects on your career. In a number of corporate environments the ability to speak eloquently in any situation is almost a requirement for success. From presenting your ideas, to asking for a raise being able to articulate your thoughts and ideas with intelligence can only benefit you. That being said there is no cure all to the fear of public speaking, but there are some simple steps one can take to conquer the fear enough to be able to speak with an air of confidence rather than nervousness.

1) Seek out public speaking organizations such as Toastmasters. Groups like Toastmasters provide an opportunity to speak in front of people and be constructively criticized on what needs improvement. It also allows you a safe environment to practice pitching ideas and giving presentations.

2) Practice, practice, practice! Whether it be in your head before answering a question or in front of the bathroom mirror before giving a status report to your boss, practicing what you would like to say will help you to be able to keep your thoughts collected when it comes time to speak up. Don't be afraid of silence while you gather your thoughts if you are put on the spot. Some of the most articulate people I know will pause for a bit before answering almost any question. It's a sign that they are listening to the question rather than thinking about what they are going to say.

3) Seek out professional help. There is a growing number of people out there who specialize in helping people with their public speaking. While this may require some out of pocket expense it seems to work for most people. Before making any kind of financial commitment be sure to check out their credential or references.

4) Keep something in your pocket or in the palm of your hand that you can fiddle with unobtrusively. Make sure it won't be noisy or distracting though. Allowing your nervous energy an outlet will help you to focus your thoughts.

Being afraid to speak in front of people comes down to being afraid of how people will perceive you. The most important thing you can do is have confidence in yourself. The world will perceive you the same way you perceive yourself. If you believe in what you are saying so will others. Win the war with fear in your head and it may not go away, but at least you'll be in control. If you can find a way to give voice to your thoughts and opinions with confidence you'll be on a path to success in any career.
