ALT-11 Bad Fathers Day Gift Ideas

From 3arf

Like most mothers, most dads like to be remembered. Father's day is a perfect opportunity. However, getting dad a bad gift will tend to leave a sour taste in his mouth, even if it is given with love and affection, and even if he says nothing about it.

After all, haven't you ever received a gift from someone you cared about greatly, and who returned the feeling, but the gift was completely wrong? Gifts like these end up sitting on shelves, gathering dust. Worse, they may be thrown or given away, if the gift isn't usable.

Key in on that word, usable. That doesn't mean that the gift should be something that is used every day, and it absolutely should not be something that has a connection to the four-letter word: Work. Instead, it should be related to fun, relaxation, and good times.

Let's look at it from the angle of mothers, understanding that there are exceptions to everything. For mother's day, a man gives his wife a new washer and drier. Romantic gift, isn't it? The same man may be bewildered as to why the wife isn't totally thrilled with the gift. Men don't understand that this can remind women too much of that nasty four letter word mentioned above.

By the same token, dads prefer not to be reminded of work. If a man has three hammers and does repairs around the house, another hammer isn't needed and it is a reminder of work. A computer technician will often have little interest in a keyboard, unless it was one he specifically said he'd like to have.

Clothing is pretty much a 'no, no'. Why is this? Because few men are especially thrilled about receiving a shirt, tie, pair of socks, shoes, and so forth. It is mundane. There is an exception to this, and it is a big one. If Dad is a fan of a particular sports team; football, baseball, hockey, soccer, or whatever, a shirt, jacket, or hat that carries the team logo is a great gift. It reminds dads of leisure rather than work.

Stay away from anything dad might think of as worthless. Buying dad a set of golf clubs, even if they are very good ones and cost a lot of money, will do little good if Dad doesn't golf. Stores abound that will be happy to sell you worthless items.

Don't get Dad things that you aren't sure he'd like, but which you'd love to have. The reverse is the mistake that many men make with mom on mother's day. Moms don't often get thrilled by having a new lawn mower on mother's day, and it should come as no surprise that dads probably won't be bouncing off the ceiling because the wife has bought him a complete manicure and hair drying set.

There are plenty of gifts you can get for dad without making bad choices. You know what he likes to do with his spare time, so focus on that. Work at getting him something he will use and enjoy, not something that will be stuffed into a dark closet somewhere.

You know your husband or father better than most people, so you do have insight into what he'd love and what would be a bomb. Just think about it and use your best judgment and you can avoid the bad father's day gift ideas.
