2010 Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade Floats Lineup

From 3arf

There are many traditions associated with the Thanksgiving holiday in America, with a popular one for many people being the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This has a history that dates back more than 80 years having first been staged in 1924. Held in New York each year on Thanksgiving Day, it has become part of the celebrations of many people, either by attending the event in person or enjoying the scenes on television.

The parade has a variety of attractions with giant balloons in the shape of various cartoon character, clowns and bands being some of these. However no parade is complete without floats and each year there are a variety of beautifully decorated floats that take part in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Many organizations collaborate with the parade designers to enter a float in the parade and these are designed in the Parade Studio which is based in Hoboken, NJ. The line up of floats for 2010 will include the following.

Kids will generally have a great time viewing the floats at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as many of them are based around kid’s shows and characters. This is no different in 2010 with some of those to look out for including 123 Sesame Street by the National Association of Music Merchants, Dora’s Christmas Carol Adventure by Nickelodeon, Snoopy’s Dog House by Peanuts Worldwide LLC and Smurf Mushroom by Sony Pictures Entertainment. These are all popular children’s characters and if you have younger children they can be good ones to point out.

Thanksgiving would not be Thanksgiving without turkey and this is celebrated in the parade with the Food Network running a Tom Turkey float, which traditionally leads the way in the parade. There are a few organizations that enter promotional style floats with some of these for 2010 including the South Dakota Office of Tourism which will have a Mount Rushmore decorated float on view, the Build-a-Bear Workshop which will be running the International CELEBEARation Clock Tower Float and Morton Salt which has the Home Baked Goodness float.

As with most years there will be a few iconic images to see on the many floats in the parade with some of those to look out for in the 2010 event including the Statue of Liberty, the Snow Queen, the Santaland Express and the Big Apple float by NY Daily News.

In all there will be 27 floats on display during the three hour event with some of the others to keep an eye out for including the Jolly Polly Pirate Ship, the Marion-Carol Showboat, a Rocking Horse and a more unusual Rocking Lobster. All the floats are beautifully decorated and will provide a great sight for those watching either from the sidewalk in New York or around the country on television.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was actually known as the Macy’s Christmas Parade when it was founded in 1924 and in this very first parade Santa Claus was welcomed into Herald Square at the finale of the parade to get the Christmas holiday season started. This is still the case these days, with Santa’s Sleigh being one of the most iconic of the floats in the parade. When the Santa’s Sleigh float enters Herald Square in 2010 it will again signify the end of the parade as well as the start of the holiday season.

There are many reasons to enjoy the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with the various attractions on show making it a spectacular event. The floats are a big part of this and the 2010 event will include those that are shown above.
