10 Things to Avoid doing at Work

From 3arf

Regardless of what kind of job you have, there is a certain level of professionalism that you need to always abide by.  Whether you are a high level business executive, an entertainer, or a construction worker, there are certain basic rules of the workplace that you need to follow.  As a result, here are ten things you should never do at work:

Sleep on the job.  If you find yourself wanting to take a nap while working, you are either extremely bored or extremely tired.  Neither is a positive reflection on you.  Either make it a point to get more rest or find a way to make your job more fulfilling.  There are some places of employment which encourage small breaks in which an employee can take a catnap.  Even this, however, is not done while you are supposed to be actively working.

Look at porn.  Unless your job requires looking at porn sites, there is never an excuse for looking at porn when you are supposed to be working.

Disrespect your boss.  Even if you disagree with your boss, it is never a good idea to disrespect your boss.  This means that you should never disrespect him to his face or behind his back.  If you and your co-workers get a kick out of sitting around making fun of the boss while he or she is away, there is a high probability that your boss will find out.

Disrespect your co-workers.  Disrespecting your co-workers is never a good idea.  It is fine to disagree as long as it is done with respect and professionalism.  Disrespecting your co-workers can be the catalyst for numerous problems on the job.

Proselytize.  Trying to convert your co-workers to your religion can cause enormous issues on the job.  You need to respect that your co-workers may have a different belief system than you.  Accept that fact and move forward.   Whether or not your co-workers have the same religious beliefs as you do should have nothing to do with getting your job done in a satisfactory manner.

Steal.  You may think you would never steal at work, but think again.  Have you ever taken a pen with a company logo on it?  Have you ever used company equipment for personal reasons?  All of these may seem to be trivial, but they are stealing.  Whereas a boss who likes you may pay these things little attention, a boss with an axe to grind will use this information as a reason for reprimand or termination.

Discuss your pay with co-workers.  There is no reason to discuss your rate of pay with co-workers.  All you are doing is setting yourself up for a problem.  If you don’t make as much as others, it will seem like you are bitter and complaining.  If you make more than others, it will make them bitter toward you.  They may even go to the boss and ask why you are making more money than they are.

Do personal business on the company computer.  It is fine to engage in social networking via Facebook on your own time.  When you do it at work, however, you are setting yourself up for trouble.  All it will take is for your boss to do a bit of checking to discover that you were playing around during company time.

Have sex.   Having naughty sex at work when nobody is looking may be a thrill, but that thrill will be short-lived when you are caught.  Don’t think that just because you are in the office alone nobody is watching.  This is the day of hidden spy cams.  Do you know for a fact that nobody is watching you?

Bring your family issues into the workplace.  You may be going through a divorce.  You may have a straying spouse.  Your child may be doing drugs.  As bad as all of that is, the workplace is not the place to bring it.  If you want to share these aspects of your life with a co-worker, do it during off-hours.

Paying attention to these 10 things will increase the probability that you will be successful at your job.
