10 Things one should know when Working in the Cubicle World
Cubicles look like giant mazes. It definitely gives a new meaning to the term "rat race". This doesn't mean that if you work in a cubicle, you should feel like you are stuck in a cage. However, there are a few things you should know.
When you are working in a cubicle, it is still you office. It doesn't matter if it looks like half a box and is very small. You should be proud that you have your own spot. More importantly, you should do your job. You are there to work.
Stay focused. Just as you don't want to knock others off track, you should also pay attention to what you are doing. Don't get easily distracted by all the happenings around you. Do your job and explore strange noises when you are off the clock.
No matter how small the cubicle is, it's your space and you should personalize it within reason. Decorate your area with your own personal style. Make your area more functional for your working needs.
Your privacy is limited when you are in a cubicle. Don't say or do anything wrong. You can be overheard so in this sense, you are always being watched. Be careful how you handle your customers and your conversations. You don't want to get in any trouble for being less than your best.
Most cubicles don't have doors. This means you can't lock your office up. Although you would probably like to trust everyone, you can't always. Leave your valuable stuff at home. If you carry a purse, lock it in a filing cabinet or desk. It is also a good idea to password protect your computer. Sometimes, it is better to be safe than sorry.
It is very important that you maintain your own personal hygiene for many reasons. This is especially true when you are working in cramped quarters. Just because you can't smell yourself, doesn't mean that others think you smell pleasant. Foul odors can be offensive and distracting to their other employees.
Maintain your voice level. Avoid turning on a loud radio or causing other distractions. The people around you are trying to work, too. Don't cause them to loose focus.
If you have a meeting with someone (or more than one person), it is best to schedule it elsewhere. For one, there may not be room for a lot of other people in your area. Another reason is so that you can speak freely without disturbing others. Opt for a conference room or a favorite restaurant. The atmosphere is more relaxed and you can actually have a little more privacy than you would in your cubicle.
Respect your neighbor's privacy. There may not be a door there but you should always knock before entering. Never go into their office without permission or when they are not around.
Be nice to your co-workers. You are all in a very close space and will be working together. You don't have to be best friends with them but you certainly should avoid conflicts. Plus, it is nice to have someone to talk to when you have down time.
Above all else, relax. Just because you are working in a cubicle doesn't mean that you will forever. You never know what the future will hold. If you maintain good behavior and accurate work, you could get a promotion or your own office. Even if you don't work ethics are important and there is no sense in paying you if you aren't going to do your job!
